Sustainability

We are pioneers in the denim industry.

Since day one, we have been commited to crafting clothes of the highest quality - with the lowest impact. No compromises.

What does that mean? Our holistic approach rests on three pillars: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, championing our belief in a circular future. For us it's about choosing materials consciously, caring for the people who make our clothes, designing for a better future, and above all: being transparent while doing so.

We don’t want to create the impression that we are perfect, we are not. But we invite you on our - sometimes bumpy - ride towards our goals.

Our mission:

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Transparancy

The fashion industry, with its numerous production steps and global production locations, is inherently complex, often resulting in non-transparent situations that contribute to social and environmental risks.

At Kings Of Indigo, we consider transparency the cornerstone of our sustainability strategy. Our approach is straightforward: without a clear understanding of where production occurs and the dynamics within our supply chain, it's impossible to identify, measure, take responsibility for, and improve potential risks and impacts. Sustainability, in our view, hinges on transparency.

Production

All our direct suppliers undergo social audits, meeting the standards of Amfori BSCI, SEDEX SMETA, or Fair Wear Foundation.

We make information about our production locations publicly available on Open Supply Hub, updating it at least once a year.

At the product level, we actively combat greenwashing in collaboration with Retraced. This platform enables us to map supply chains, track sustainability efforts, and provide easily accessible information to our end consumers through QR codes attached to each garment.

Reduce, Reuse & Recycle

REDUCE

It’s only sustainable if it lasts, that is our believe. We focus on producing closet essentials with timeless designs, that can last and be loved for a lifetime, rather than a season.

REUSE

Let's keep it real, even our garments might need a little fixing over time. And there will come a time when your once favourite, doesn’t fit your style any longer, it’s okay, you are only human.

We encourage you to not let your carefully crafted items go to waste, breathe new life into them and start building a legacy.

RECYCLE

Recycling has slowly but steady become a part of our DNA. It's a no brainer when it comes to deciding between fabrics. Committed to transforming waste into resources, we are here to convince you about the beautiful benefits that the world of recycled material has to offer.

REDUCE

It’s only sustainable if it lasts. Make your loved clothes last even longer, by following our Care Guide.

High quality, low impact

We focus on producing closet essentials with timeless designs, that can last and be loved for a lifetime, rather than a season. While doing so, we never compromise on sustainability production process: high quality, low impact.

As a denim brand, cotton is by far our most used material. It's where we can make big impact. This is why you will only find organic or recycled cotton in our collections. Organic cotton is grown without harmful chemicals and prioritizes soil health and biodiversity. Recycled cotton reduces the need for new fibers, and reduces our full environmental impact.

For summer wardrobe essentials we are a big fan of linen and hemp, one of the oldest natural fabrics in the world, grown without the use of nasty chemicals and hardly needing any water.

Further, you might discover materials like TENCEL™, ECOVERO™ or REFIBRA™. Soft, silky sheen luxury fabrics, made with environmentally friendly processes.

Working with a circular mindset, we have a big focus on natural materials. Our goal is to cut down even further on synthetics, even their recycled varieties, in coming collections.

AN EYE FOR EVERY DETAIL

When claiming a holistic sustainability approach, every detail matters. That means even the buttons of a shirt, pockets of jeans and labels in a sweater are chosen consciously.

Instead of plastic, we use corozo buttons, made from the tagua nut that grows on palm trees. We're proud to share it's fully biodegradable. Metal buttons used for our jeans get an environmentally friendly finish, using less water, energy and chemicals, and our zippers have a recycled PET zipper tape.

Woven labels consist of 80% recycled polyester and 20% organic cotton. Paper trims are always made from recycled paper.

Packaging

We've made a conscious decision to eliminate unnecessary packaging from our process.

For a selection of styles that don't need extra packaging, we've streamlined our approach. Instead of utilizing individual packaging, we exclusively use the main packaging. This means some of the denims will arrive at your doorstep in an eco-friendly box, without the need for additional polybags.

Speaking of polybags, when we do use them for other garments, rest assured they are made from 80% recycled material, minimizing our environmental footprint.

Processes

Jeans production can be quite intensive on the environment. This is particularly related to the washing of the jeans, which gives its unique look. Luckily, we work exclusively with suppliers that implement innovative technologies to reduce impact, mostly on chemical and water use.

As an alternative to harmful processes, our jeans are treated with laser technology, ozone washing and more sustainable alternatives to stone washing. Harmful bleach chemicals are eliminated.

In other words: no compromises here.

RECYCLE

Recycling has slowly but steady become a part of our DNA. It's a no brainer when it comes to deciding between fabrics. Committed to transforming waste into resources, we are here to convince you about the beautiful benefits that the world of recycled material has to offer.

Thinking ahead

Doing business in a sustainable way also means not producing way more than you will sell. It can be difficult to make these exact estimations, and sometimes situations change. But, without any doubt we pledge to never destroy any unsold garments but to always find a different solution when it turns out that we have too much stock, even if this means we will not make any profit by doing so.

Beyond producing garments with the lowest possible impact, we look forward to the next stages in their life. We take responsibility for the part that comes after the garment is sold and design with circularity mind. More and more we use mono-materials when possible, so our garments can be recycled and used again.

It's pretty good

Embrace the eco warrior within you

Unfortunately, a big number of valuable garments and other textile articles still end up with regular waste. We hope to infect you with our recycling crazies and make you consider one of the follow options when you no longer wish to keep your garment:

Share treasures

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure, right?! Organize a swap party with your friends or colleagues, attend a swap event, or visit a swap store in your neighborhood. Declutter your closet, socialize, and take new favorites home (for free!).

Donate

Donate to local charities or thrift stores. Make someone else happy while giving your garment a second life.

Recycle! It's easy

We can’t say it enough, we are big fans of recycling. A great part of our collection is made with recycled materials, which means we don’t need to use new ones and can lower our environmental footprint. You can help by not throw away your valuable textiles with your household waste, but bring it to a textile collection bin. From there it is made sure that wearable garments are resold, and unwearable garments are recycled to be something new.
